Ceren Ercan was born in Istanbul in 1981. Upon graduating from the department of Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy in Istanbul University, she pursued graduate education at the department of Cinema in Marmara University. Since 2003, she has been working as a dramaturg in Bakirkoy Municipal Theater.
She is one of the founders of the ‘New Text New Theater’ project by GalataPerform, where she offered playwriting training and consultancy. She formed a team of young people for the project “High Schoolers are Writing Plays”, with whom she has created productions since 2009.
She cofounded the oyun deposu in 2007, and worked in the creative team for their play THE UGLY HUMAN-LING, which was translated into three languages and performed in numerous festivals in Europe such as Wiener Festwochen and Theatre Biennale New Plays from Europe. Furthermore, the text of this play was published in Germany’s Theater Heute Magazine.
In 2010, she attended the playwriting workshop by Simon Stephens from the Royal Court Theater. In 2011, she received a scholarship for artists under the Kadmos project of ‘Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts’ and Festival d’Avignon.
She’s the director and co-author of the play ISTENMEYEN which premiered at 19th Istanbul International Theatre Festival in 2014. ‘Istenmeyen’ has been staged in various venues and under the umbrella of numerous different festivals in Istanbul. It had also been staged in Germany at Offenewelt Festival and in Paris at Chantier d’europe which is organised by Theatre de la Ville. The play was also staged in New York, Phoenix Theatre Ensemble.
She is currently working as a script and playwriting consultant, and teaching ‘Cinema and Dramaturgy’ in Bahcesehir University. She is also a jury member of Afife Jale Theater Awards, which is the most established board of awards in Turkey.
