Maja Das Gupta

Maja Das Gupta studied prose and drama at the German Literature Institute and modern German literature, English and theater studies at the LMU Munich. She worked for various radio stations and theaters.

For her play “Zappen” she received a nomination for Best New Playwright in Theater Heute. The Zimmertheater Tübingen provided the world premiere, and Radio Bremen’s radio play production was nominated as ARD’s Best Radio Play. At the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, “Der Nachlass” was premiered. She worked at the Tribüne and Neuköllner Oper Berlin and since then has commuted between work in the independent scene and the municipal theater. Last season, the TIG 7 in Mannheim opened the series “Autorenportrait” with her, presented various of her texts in readings and premiered “Abend in Cape Cod”. On March 8, her first classroom play will premiere at Theater Heilbronn: “Tito, My Father and I” deals with the effects of the war in Yugoslavia.

She has received several grants and has been invited to various writers’ meetings, including the Vienna Burgtheater’s Workshop Days, the Munich Kammerspiele’s Playwrights’ Weekend, and the Bonn Biennale’s Writers’ Meeting. For “Mrs. Scatterbrain and Ganesh” she received the Children’s Theater Scholarship of the Frankfurt Children’s and Youth Theater Center. Since January 2012, Maja Das Gupta has been nominated as one of three authors in the Leipzig Authors’ Competition.

Since 2010, SWR has broadcast an annual radio play by Maja Das Gupta, so far “Sneak Preview”, “Falschmünzer” and this year a short version of the play“Nur fliegend/Only flying, which she writes in a dialogical process with director Frank Heuel for the fringe ensemble.
